Nice to meet you, I'm Luigi, UX designer & psychologist.
After studying psychology and becoming a licensed psychologist, I trained in design and worked for 2 years as a UX/UI designer. After which, I also completed a Master's in UX Design at Talent Garden Innovation School.
I probably planted the seed of UX by deciding to take the courses 'Psychology and Art' and 'Cyberpsychology' when I was at the Università Europea di Roma - UER; even then, I was much more fascinated by the study of mental mechanisms than by becoming a therapist. However, I decided to complete the latter path to keep more doors open and because opportunities as a researcher in Italy are very scarce.
At the end of my post-graduation internship, the lockdown kicked in. At this point I had 2 things: curiosity and free time.
Thus, I started getting involved in e-commerce with a friend, and by creating a website for the first time, I discovered that I was very interested in designing digital products and experiences, both for the creative component and for the one related to psychology. In fact, here, my knowledge of human behavior and cognitive functions could find an application different from the clinical one.
So I started studying in-depth, to the point that the Interaction Design Foundation published an article on the transition from psychology to UX design, citing me.
I believe the essence of my job is making choices strategically; understanding problems and needs (both user and business) and designing to solve them.
I have always been a creative person. I have expressed this inclination in countless ways, from coming up with bass lines for my old band, to composing, producing, and recording entire instrumental music albums, as well as painting and, when I was a kid, sketching comic book stories.
I enjoy being involved in all aspects of UX; from research, where my analytical mind and empirical eye are fully engaged, to ideation and prototyping, where I can methodically express my ability to find solutions.
How did I specialize in UX?
In 2021, I have obtained the Google UX/UI Design Professional Certificate; It provided me with a strong foundation to start from: design thinking.
During the same year I studied the basics of coding on Codecademy; this because I soon realized that I'm like an architect, and this makes it my duty to know what we're talking about when I design something that engineers will then have to implement.
The source from which I most satisfied my thirst for knowledge is the Interaction Design Foundation (IxDF).
My 17 IxDF certificates are:
- 'Become a UX Designer from Scratch'
- 'User Experience: The Beginner’s guide'
- 'Human-Computer Interaction - HCI'
- 'Gestalt Psychology and Web Design'
- 'Mobile User Experience Design'
- 'Web Design for Usability'
- 'Design Thinking: The Ultimate Guide'
- 'Psychology of Interaction Design'
- 'UI Design Patterns for Successful Software'
- 'Affordances: Designing Intuitive User Interfaces'
- 'The Brain and Technology: Brain Science In Interface Design'
- 'How to Design for Augmented and Virtual Reality'
- 'Information Visualization'
- 'Gamification - Creating Addictive User Experiences'
- 'Design for the 21st Century with Don Norman'
- 'Psychology of E-commerce: How to Sell Online'
- 'Accessibility: How to Design for All'
My interest and updating are constant; therefore, I attend webinars, read books, articles, follow more experienced professionals on social networks, and take courses, for example, I have obtained the following certificates on Udemy:
- 'Information Architecture Fundamentals' by Joe Natoli
- 'UI Design Handoff to Development' by Moon Learning
- 'Responsive UX/UI Design in Figma' by Moon Learning
In January 2024 I took the Fastweb Digital Academy's UX/UI Design Course, with Professor Andrea Pinchi.
But the most important piece came on July 8, 2024, when I earned my Master’s in UX Design from the renowned Talent Garden Innovation School.
I strongly wanted to take a break to achieve this educational milestone because I felt the need to make a significant leap forward as a professional.
What's my experience?
In 2022, I had my first work experiences as a UX/UI designer; these were small freelance collaborations with various types of startups. During this time, I was able to get to know different environments quickly and, most importantly, I had the opportunity to practice a lot of what I had studied. These collaborations include: Vega Protocol (crypto, De-Fi), Portal Technologies (AI-driven store management), Sunrise ( Web3 cybersecurity).
In September 2022 I started my 6-months
stage at
InfoCamere, the Italian Chambers of Commerce's IT company, responsible for managing the vast amount of data related to Italian businesses and providing them with various digital services in the context of public administration.
For more detailsThis has been a different experience from previous ones; it is an extremely larger and more structured company, with 1100 employees, 4 locations, and a state-of-the-art data center. I got to work in a team, under deadlines pressure and with a fair degree of responsibility, again dealing with very different aspects of UX/UI design; it was fun, it was challenging, and I feel I learned and grew a lot.
In May 2023, I accepted the offer to be part, as a co-founder, of an ambitious team, in which I was the the only designer; we worked for almost an year on the launch of CercaEasy, a tech HR startup. We also participated in an incubation program (Startup Geeks) but, as often happens with startups, things didn’t go as planned, and in the end, the project failed.
Nevertheless, I take away an experience that has helped me grow a lot. I worked in Agile, took on many responsibilities, designed an entire web app, and sought to place research first by introducing a design culture.
In December 2023, I started freelancing again. My most relevat experience was with Universum, a Swedish multinational company that provides employer branding services to companies. As a UX consultant I was involved in a project with their client Credem, a major Italian bank.
